Book-to-screen adaptations are everywhere in 2025—from We Were Liars hitting Amazon Prime to behind-the-scenes documentaries like A Minecraft Movie: From Block to Big Screen. As fans, it’s always exciting (and a little nerve-wracking) to see how our favorite stories are translated visually. Will they capture the heart of the book? Will the characters still feel real?

For me, this topic is deeply personal. Since I was a teen, I’ve dreamed of seeing my stories on screen.

🎬 Where It All Began

Long before Genius Reading and Reggie Raccoon, I was just a kid with big ideas. I created a superhero show with my cousins and siblings—we called it The Battle Team. It followed five young adults destined to save the world from a mysterious villain named Mr. Nobodi. That idea stuck with me for years.

In 2018, I finally sat down and started writing it out seriously. I even hired an artist and began developing it as a comic book. Why a comic? Because the barrier to entry felt lower than TV or film, and I was hungry to see my characters in action. We made great progress, but like many creative projects, life got in the way. My artist partner became unavailable, and the comic went on pause.

🦝 Enter Reggie Raccoon

Around that same time, I saw a raccoon in my backyard. Nothing special at first—just a regular suburban moment—but it sparked an idea. Could I turn a raccoon into a book character? Something simple, fun, and educational?

It helped that my son was deep into Diary of a Wimpy Kid—a black-and-white illustrated series that sold millions. That lit a fire in me. I thought, "If Jeff Kinney could do it, maybe I can too."

So I got to work. I reconnected with my artist on a commission basis (black-and-white illustrations were far more affordable), and Reggie Raccoon was born. I wrote it, published it, and began selling it online and at pop-up events in person. It’s been a journey.

📺 But My Dream Is Bigger

Even though I’m focused on selling books and growing the Genius Reading brand, my original dream hasn’t changed. I still imagine Reggie on TV—animated, fun, full of life. I think about who might voice him, whether kids will laugh at the jokes, and how the story could evolve for a series.

I’m not there yet. I haven’t landed a screen deal. But I wanted to share my journey—because maybe you're a creator dreaming of the same thing. Or maybe you're a reader who's supported Genius Reading and wondered where all this is going.

It’s going somewhere. One day, I truly believe Reggie will make it from the page to the screen.

Thanks for reading my story.
